Bringing Families Together:
First-Ever Family Math and Literacy Night a Success

A family of four tries their hand at math and literacy games.

The 21st Century Charter School at Gary hosted a Family Math and Literacy Night on Monday, February 23rd. The K-2 teachers hosted a full room of students, parents, grandparents, and even aunts. The night began with a Jeopardy!-style game called “Are You Smarter than Your Student?” Families enjoyed the interactive game, and the students certainly had something to teach the adults!

Next, the head librarian from the Children’s Room at the Gary Public Library described the materials and programs available at the library. After the library presentation, families broke into groups to explore literacy activities used in Kindergarten, first, and second grade. The adults were surprised at the difficulty of a second grade A+ lesson, and the students earned their apples faster than their family members!

The evening closed with a presentation on spelling strategies and an activity in which families brainstormed ways to help their students practice spelling words at home. Every person who attended the event also went home with workbooks, flash cards, and other materials to help their K-2 students practice literacy and math skills at home. It was an enjoyable evening for all, and 21st Century families can look forward to the school’s next Family Night.
