K-2 Family Night
21st Century hosted a family night for kindergarten, first grade, and second grade families on March 11, 2010. The family night was a great success, with around 45 people in attendance. The kindergarten, first grade, and second grade teachers and learning guides planned the event and gave presentations. Each grade did a 20-minute presentation explaining a program that students use at 21st Century.
Kindergarten gave a presentation about Discovery Education. The presentation helped families understand what Discovery Education is and why we use it in our classrooms. Discovery Education is an online database of photographs, audio, videos, explorations, and virtual labs. Parents were excited to know their students are using this technology in the classroom.
The first grade presentation was about a new reading program called Accelerated Reader. The presentation explained that 21st Century started the program to encourage students to read for pleasure and to help students improve their reading comprehension. The parents had an opportunity to take an Accelerated Reader reading quiz themselves.
Second grade talked about the 6+1 Traits of Writing. 6+1 Traits of Writing is a framework teachers use to help their students become better writers. Parents got to see just how fun writing can be when you use children’s literature to teach different traits of writing. Our parents participated in an activity that taught the “voice” trait through the book No, David!, written by David Shannon.
The family night also hosted a guest speaker. Officer Kalvitas from the Lake County Sheriff’s department spoke about internet safety. He gave us tips on how to keep children safe on the computer. His number one rule was to always monitor what websites your child visits and to keep the computer in an open area of the house.
Overall, the family night was a great way for teachers to communicate to parents all the exciting programs used to boost students’ academic progress at 21st Century. Go Cougars!
